PREP classrooms contain a variety of learning centers. A learning center is a place where related materials are grouped together in a way that allows children to direct their own learning. Learning centers give children the opportunity to become more responsible, while providing for freedom of choice and expression. A learning center may be as simple as puzzles grouped together or as elaborate as a log cabin furnished with costumes and cooking utensils.

Although children in a learning center may appear to just be “having fun”, play is, in fact, essential for children, even through the elementary years. Through directed play, children explore their world, try out new ideas & experiments, learn to cooperate with others, build problem-solving skills and so on. The child who is building with blocks, for example, is learning on many different levels:

• Through pulling, pushing, carrying, balancing, grasping and reaching, she is refining coordination skills

• Through counting, comparing size  and using 1-to-1 correspondence, he is developing quantitative thinking skills

• Through the use of form, balance and design, she is growing in aesthetic appreciation

• Through the use of discussion, conversation and role-playing, he is expanding his use of language

THE CURRICULUM:

Within the classroom, the curriculum focuses on three main areas of learning:  academic skills, such as learning the names of the alphabet letters and sounds that they make; general concepts, emphasizing skill development in the areas of attributes, positioning, sorting and classifying, etc; and the monthly unit of study, which includes topics such as All about Me, Community Helpers, Weather and Nutrition.  Again, learning activities in these areas emphasize a child-centered involvement.  Learning centers, circle time, whole language experiences, and cooking are all typical of a PREP day.

At PREP, we believe that reading is a process which develops over time, and that children best learn to read much in the same way that they learn to talk.  Reading therefore, is not taught as a separate subject; but is emphasized in every aspect of the curriculum.  Through whole language activities, instruction in phonics to give children the skills they need to "decode" words, and a strong emphasis on books and reading to children, PREP provides a "reading rich" environment in which all language skills, including reading, will develop naturally.

The PREP curriculum is founded on the importance of building a positive sense of self-worth and self-esteem in children.  Building self-esteem and feelings of accomplishment are the foundation on which the curriculum is built.

KINDERGARTEN

Students must be 5 years of age by September 1st to be enrolled.  Students attend

Monday-Friday from 9:00 - noon.  Students have the option of staying until 2:30

Monday - Thursday for our extended day program.  There are twelve students with

a certified teacher and her assistant.

Even though your child may have been enrolled in a preschool program, the

kindergarten year is significant as a child's first experience with “real” school. At PREP,

we share your desire to make your child’s kindergarten year an exceptional one - one

that will not only give your child a solid foundation for future learning experiences, but

will also kindle his or her desire to learn. This booklet has been written to better acquaint

you with the unique features of the kindergarten program at PREP School. We hope it will

answer your questions about this very important year; and we encourage you to stop by

for a visit to our classroom.

Like the rest of The PREP School, the Kindergarten is a developmental program that

emphasizes child-centered, “hands-on” activities and experiences. Class size is strictly

limited to allow daily time for individual instruction in a variety of settings. Our goal is

to ensure that each child achieves success at the highest levels of his or her individual

gifts and abilities.

WHY CHOOSE PREP KINDERGARTEN? 1) Small student to teacher ratio  2) Individualized instruction tailored to the needs of each child 3) Fully integrated curriculum 4) Large, well-equipped classroom 5) Enriched, accelerated curriculum 5) Experienced, educated and enthusiastic staff

FIELD TRIP:

The Kindergarten Class enjoys field trips throughout the year to such places as Longview World of Wonders Children's Museum (WOW),  Longview Community Ministries to help their with their food pantry, and to Callie Acres to enjoy their Pumpkin Patch.
